Spring had come at long last and, though Airen loved the snow, she also loved the warmth of the sun. It was only early spring, so the weather was still cool and there was still some snow, but the new growth all around and the damp ground made it difficult to mistake the season for winter. The snow was melted or melting in most places, especially right around the large lake, called Hungry Horse Lake. The snow on the lake shore had melted away to expose the muddy, damp ground underneath. Airen avoided the mud, knowing that it would get her white fur even dirtier than it already was. It had been a long time since she had cared about appearance much, but she found herself in an oddly light mood, one that changed her mindset a little. Maybe it wouldn't be so bad to take better care of her pretty appearance, even though it had made her life hard before she had left her home pack.
Walking just along the edge of the forest, where the ground began to slope down towards the lake, Airen recalled the first time she had visited this place. It had been some time ago, and then she had visited the falls and not the lake. Emerald Falls had been beautiful, even though she had been interrupted by a male. He had scared her at first, but the meeting had been short and they had parted and here she was, alive and well. Nothing had gone wrong. Maybe males weren't as bad as she made them out to be, then. Maybe it had just been her pack. Nodin had been all right, at the very least. Maybe there were others like them out here.
Shoving such thoughts from her head - thinking of Nodin was still painful - she energetically broke into a trot. Her walk had no real purpose. She was merely soaking up her share of the sun and getting her share of exercise for the day. Not having a home did make things difficult. Often she went hungry, for it was difficult for her to hunt for herself. She could tell that she had lost weight, even though she was far from starving to death. The rational part of her mind constantly told her that she needed to find a pack to call home so that she could live a better life, but another part of her told her to avoid packs at all costs. Packs meant trouble, and trouble was what she wanted to avoid. Now, if there were a pack of all females, maybe then she might be tempted to join. Her own sex wasn't so bad. It was the opposite sex that she was afraid of.
It was difficult to catch any real scents with the air so damp from melting snow and the rain that had visited the lake an hour or so ago. That made her nervous, since she wouldn't be able to smell anyone who was approaching her. She would have to rely on her ears alone. But that only did a little to dampen her mood. Spring always found her more lively and energetic, as if she gained new energy with the new growth that came with the season. By the time she had circled half of the lake at her steady trot she was only just panting. Her legs were ready to complete an entire circuit of the lake, but her eyes caught sight of a stream that emptied into the lake and she chose to take advantage of the water rather than continue on. She could have drank from the lake, but the shore was too muddy for her liking. The ground around the stream was rockier, which meant less mud.
Airen slowed, then stopped, her feet just a few inches from the fast-moving stream. She lowered her head slowly, her eyes open and glancing around to search for danger, towards the miniature river. At last, she lowered her eyes as well and began to drink. The cool water burned for a moment, but then it began to quench her thirst and she drank greedily.

speaking//thoughts
The air smelled of the spring time creatures that lived in this area. Canine nostrils flared, drawing in those oh so enticing scents. Contort lifted his nose to the wind, sucking those smells in with a hearty draw. Saliva coated his mouth, making it hard to not want to chase after whatever smelled so delicious, but it was obvious to his keen nose that whatever it was, was much too far for him to go after. A slow sigh passed his lips and the multihued brute went on his way, moving around trees, bushes and other such things. His paws were light as they tapped against the ground, though they left much larger indents in the ground than a wolf of his size normally would. He shifted from side to side as he moved through this unknown area. He’d never traveled this far into a place like this. Contort normally stayed close to the pack lands, just to see what was going on out there. It was easy for him. He was silent and cunning, knowing just when to avoid certain areas and when it was safe to be there. Guess that wasn’t something he should be too proud of, but it wasn’t in his power not to be that proud.
His paws carried him deeper and deeper into this unforgiving land. His body lowered, coming closer to the ground as he stalked along, eyes of a topaz hue dancing this way and that while multihued ears swiveled this way and that, following nearly the same path that his eyes did. Nostrils flared, drawing in the scent of the world around him. A new, pungent scent hit him and his head tilted ever so slightly, trying to catch that scent once more. It drifted away though, following the breeze. Contort’s paws carried him toward the scent, following the breeze, but it was just too fast. His paws suddenly lifted and it was as if the wind had chosen to carry him in that direction. His breath rushed in and out of his lungs, filling them quickly before having them empty themselves before sucking down oxygen once more. He’d never run so hard in his life, but this scent. He had to know what it was, though he already had some kind of idea about what it was and who it was coming from. No, he didn’t say where it was coming from because it could only be coming from another canine.
Letting out a low growl, he pushed himself harder. It was like he would reach it and then it would get further and further away. His heart beat like a drum within his rib cage. He had to find this and play with it. That was just who he was. A feral grin slipped acrossed his features and he moved into the tree line, just behind the white femora that seemed not to have noticed me yet. She lapped at the water and Contort watched her with mild interest. What he really wanted to know was how she would react to him revealing himself from the closure of the forest around him. His head tilted and he looked at her for a moment longer, than braved a slow, cautious step forward. He would play it cool act like he wasn’t following her scent or anything like that. He moved further away, enough space to be respectful, but not enough that she wasn’t out of sight. Contort dipped his head down to the water, confident that this female would not be foolish enough to attack him. His eyes shifted over too her and he faked surprise as he lifted his head, water running down his jaw.
Those topaz eyes locked on her and held for a moment as he took her in, letting her think that he’d had no idea she was there. His ears pricked forward and twitched slightly as he tried to catch any words she might speak. Contort’s lips parted slowly and he walked a bit closer, but not invading her space in the least. “Why, hello there.” He bowed his head in greeting, a gesture he’d learned while he’d still been with his father, “I am Contort and you are?” The words were soft and sweet, but there was an underlying bit of seduction to them. He hoped she didn’t notice. He wasn’t ready to scare her away. Yet.

Airen thought she heard something, but when she lifted her head to check things out she couldn’t see anything. When she tested the air she scented nothing and failed to note that the breeze was blowing her scent backwards, behind her, and that she couldn’t smell anything that might have sneaked up on her. Somewhat satisfied that no one was there, Airen slowly lowered her head back down to the water and continued to drink her fill. She was cautious, however, and she continued to flick her ears here and there, catching any sound that was loud enough to reach her ears over the sound of the water.
When she heard another sound she looked up, just as a wolf walked past her to the water and began to drink as if he didn’t even know she was there. Several thoughts crossed through her mind at once. First, she figured him an idiot, but then she decided that he knew she was there and chose to ignore the fact. Then she noticed that he was bigger than her by several inches and her heart did a little flip. She was no good in a fight, and this male might be here to threaten her in some way. If only Nodin were here! she caught herself thinking. A pang of sadness followed that thought, and then she tossed all thoughts of Nodin out of her head for the time being. It would do no good to wish that he was here with her. Nodin was dead.
Within in the few moments that it had taken for those thoughts to cross her mind, Airen had frozen and her ears had gone back to lay flat against her head. For a few moments anger sparked in her eyes, only to be quickly replaced by fear. She had no way to defend herself. He was going to hurt her and there was nothing she could do about it, of that she felt certain. He legs shook slightly, upset by the male’s sudden appearance and her lack of protection. When the male looked up, surprise in his eyes, she was still convinced that he had known she was there and was planning on hurting her in some way. That was the way it was with all males, with the exception of Nodin. He was the only one who had ever been good to her.
She watched him closely, flinching every time even the smallest part of him moved. When he stepped closer she took it as a threat and – even though he was still quite a ways away – an invasion of her space and moved backwards the same number of steps that he had taken, clearly a warning that he should not come any closer. Even the bowing of his head she took as a threat. He might have seemed to be polite enough when he made that gesture and spoke to her, but she was convinced that he was trying to lure her into a false sense of security. Then, when she let her guard down and grew more comfortable he would turn on her, just as others had done in the past. So far he wasn’t making a move to attack, but she knew males. He would take advantage of her. There was a good chance he wouldn’t even kill her, just use her as the males in her pack had once wanted to do. And there would be nothing she could do to stop him if that was what he wanted.
She heard what he said, but she didn’t plan on responding to him or giving him the information that he requested. Instead, even though she was practically cowering away from him, she tried to put defiance into the expression on her face. It failed, the fear being stronger than anything else, but she had tried. At the same time she spoke, trying to sound defiant. “Go away,” she told him. Her voice was light and shook, lacking the sound of defiance that she had wanted it to have. Oh well. It was too late now. She would have to settle with what she had already said. Hopefully he would just leave her be, but for some reason she doubted that would be the case. She was never that lucky.
