Slender form slunk across the snowy grounds soundlessly, her bi-coloured eyes searching the ground before her. The snow here was not freshly fallen, it was already hardened and clumped together, packed down into a hard surface from the other wildlife which had passed through on it. Solace could make out the old tracks laid down by a few deer, as well as the tiny scuff marks undoubtedly made by smaller game such as hares and maybe even some squirrels or other miscellaneous rodents. She sighed lightly, gaze rising from the ground and lingering on the towering structure before her. She had heard this mountain was called Kintla Mountain, although why it had received that name she was unsure. Maybe it was close to the Kintla pack lands? She shrugged it off, not totally caring. She had heard it was a large mountain, but she was taken aback by just how large it actually was. It felt like a long amount of time before her bi-coloured eyes finished traveling the height of the giant rock, and she gawked at it in slight awe. It was beautiful, with it's peaks decorated in the fluffy white powder. She had no doubt that the snow up there was probably fresh and untouched, no paw prints to damage the sweet perfection of the brilliant white surface.
Solace would have to explore this mountain someday, but today was not that day. She didn't quite trust herself enough to venture up there in the dead of winter, one wrong move could send her for a nasty tumble. The winter months made things rather unpredictable. She snorted, letting her gaze fall from the massive body of rock. Her stomach had let off a tiny grumble, letting her know that it wanted some nourishment, but she ignored her body, scolding it for bothering her. Solace was a skinny, underweight wolf, but her full winter coat added some needed bulk to her body, and made her appear an average weight. She was constantly hungry, she ate very sparsely, mostly because she was a lone wolf, and it was the winter, it wasn't very often she came across any sort of game. She scowled at the collage of footprints in the ground, brows furrowed in annoyance. She always seemed to be too late to run into them, they had passed through here long before, they were always one step ahead. So, she had learned to ignore her hunger, learned to deal with the annoying stomach cramps which sometimes seized her lithe frame. Her hunger wasn't a pressing issue for her anymore, she was probably due for a meal now, but she could put it off for a few more days, in a lame hope to just happen across a rabbit or something similar, rather than tracking one down.
She tore her gaze away from the ground again, her fur quivering as a rather chilly breeze ruffled past her. Solace didn't mind the winter months, they made her stand out less with her lightly coloured coat, whereas in the summer she stood out like a sore thumb in the majority of places, but she could live without the cold. She didn't have enough fat on her bones to act as insulation in the cold, her fur helped a little, but Solace suffered greatly in any sort of storm, she was not cut out for harsh winter days. She started forward, tail swaying in sync with her rocking hips. Maybe if she ventured toward the sparsely gathered trees, she would find something to eat. She doubted it, but her stomach was egging her on to go look anyway. So, she obeyed, she had nothing else more pressing to do.
As she walked, her lowered her muzzle to the snow covered ground, nose twitching furiously at the tip of her muzzle. The only scents she picked up on were old and musty, making her muzzle crinkle in annoyance. She could never be graced with a little luck, could she? She shook her head gently, letting her hopes at finding any game by the trees diminish. She continued toward them anyway, her steps slow and somewhat dragged out as she pulled herself toward the scraggly forest. As she reached the tree line, she let her advances stop, her gaze resting on the bare branches of the tree she was beside. Sighing, she settled her haunches into the ground beside the tree, leaning her body against it. Her tail curled loosely around the base of her body, offering her paws some extra warmth. Her gaze fanned out through the trees briefly, and finding nothing interesting, she turned it to her paws, her nose still twitching feebly as she attempting to pick up any trace of a rabbit or other small prey. Nothing but stale fragrances. She shook her head gently, giving up.
notes; wow, really short, sorry. I didn't have as much starting muse today as I though I did x.x

There was really no reason for her to be here, but the small femme had grown almost fond of this place. Perhaps, once her pack was bigger, she would expand to encompass this area as well; for now, however, she was merely visiting the loners' lands, wandering around in search of company or solitude, depending on what the day chose to give her. The snow was deep, and she pretty much had to tunnel through it. The white fluff wasn't quite high enough that she couldn't be seen beneath it, but there wasn't much that one could see below the tips of her ears. Why she had chosen this particular route escaped even the usually intelligent Alpha; all it was for her was extra work and a cold, clumpy pelt. Still, it wasn't too long after she'd embarked upon that trail of thought that she found herself on a game trail. From there, she could easily continue forward without plunging head-first into a bush she simply couldn't see beneath the snow.
This wasn't her favorite season, though it would have been beneficial if she had more members in her pack. In the future, it would sort out the weaker wolves and let her see who could truly survive whatever was thrown at them. Those were the wolves worth having. Because her mind had wandered again, she hadn't been paying attention to the scents around her; it wasn't until she saw the rabbit that she noticed the smaller creature. Her muscles tensed and her ears flicked forward; her attention was fully on the prey before her now. By some miracle, or perhaps dumb luck, the lagomorph hadn't been alerted to her presence, so when she jumped towards it, the little critter didn't even see her coming. Her teeth easily sunk into its small throat, and it was dead within moments. Since she wasn't particularly hungry, and she didn't want to eat until her body felt it was necessary, she simply picked up her kill and continued wandering.
Since she had found a game trail, she continued along it; no use wasting energy if she didn't have a destination anyway. It wasn't so long before she caught the scent of another wolf, and her tail wagged a little. This was a good day! The trail led her towards a patch of trees, and she looked around. The last snowfall hadn't been very recent; they had almost all dropped the snow from their branches, and deer and other animals had had time to trample the snow along the path she now followed. The scent of wolf was ahead of her, and getting closer as well, so Laya sped up a bit. There was no sense in making the stranger wait, since the small wolf wouldn't ever assume her scent wasn't just as obvious to others as theirs were to her. Her paws pushed her forward, and the rabbit in her mouth had only cooled a bit by the time she came into sight of the larger female.
Rather tactlessly, the little brown wolf spat out her kill in front of her and gave the pale wolf a friendly, if bloody, grin, "Hello!" She would be the first to admit that she was a bit stir-crazy; even now, her lands were quite empty, and that left relatively few things for one to do when one was so small she could barely leave the dens most days. The fact that she was out here at all was testament to how badly she needed to get away from the monotony; as much as she enjoyed Malady's company, there was only so much of that wolf she could take before needing to do something else.
It took her a moment to realize that the two eyes in the stranger's head weren't the same color, and another to store that information and react. "You've got very pretty eyes," she stated simply, licking her muzzle in an effort to clean herself off. It worked, for the most part, but since she hadn't truly been expecting to find the other wolf, she hadn't taken the time she might have to make herself presentable. It wasn't a huge deal, in her mind, since she hadn't been worrying about tricking anyone or any of that; she simply wanted company, if the stranger would allow it. Perhaps she wouldn't and Laya would take her kill and leave again. Truly, it made no difference; anything was welcome at that moment. While Laya wouldn't have appreciated being attacked, even that would have been a kind reprieve from her boredom.
Her ears once more pointed forward, her attention respectfully focused on the wolf before her. It occurred to her that, if this wolf were a loner, she might not have quite the same advantage when it came to food as even Laya herself had; while her pack was small in the most generous of descriptions, those few wolves still had more opportunities to bring down prey than one wolf had on her own. "Are you hungry? I had the good fortune of nearly running into this guy and still managing to catch him by surprise, but I can certainly spare the kill..." Her smile was kind and open; she truly wasn't trying to trick anyone into doing anything. The small alpha didn't know about her compulsion, but she couldn't have said for sure whether she would use it if she had. She didn't know this wolf, and she couldn't say whether she was hungry or not, but something told her that she probably was. Even if that was so, it wasn't her place to force a rabbit down this wolf's throat; if she didn't want it then Laya could only try, politely of course, to change her mind.

The little ivory dame blended in fairly well with her surroundings, the only traits which completely threw her off in this winter wilderness being her bright, mismatched eyes. One which was a shocking, clear sky blue, and the other which was a deep emerald colour. Most of her fur blended in nicely with the area around her, but the tiny beige tinges which spotted her coat here and there also stood out against the white canvas. She hardly cared, Solace could see nothing around her in this place for a while. No sign of any small game, let alone anything larger. She sighed lightly to herself, gaze easing out over the thin covering of trees around her. The forest was very bare at this time of year, most of trees had lost all their leaves, now only standing as a tall, skinny structure of bark. Not at all complimenting, Solace thought, but adverted her attention toward the few evergreen trees which scattered themselves around the forest. She wondered why they remained green all year round, she was happy they did, at least they were still pretty and offered some shelter from the harsh winds. Even if they were adorned with pointy needles, their branches were lush and full, and easy to hide beneath.
She let her gaze drift away from these trees too, her lithe body slumping against the bare tree beside her. She was hungry, not to mention a little on the cold side, but both of these things she could ignore for the time being. The air was chilly, but there were no harsh winds as of yet, and Solace was grateful. Her tiny, uninsulated body would surely hate her for being this much out in the open were there any wind. Her tail wrapped loosely around her paws, giving her a somewhat dainty stance, that was only ruined by the fact that she was slumped against the tree in a rather unladylike fashion. Not that she really cared, was she really trying to impress anybody here? She snorted, nose twitching as she thought of the company of wolves with a slight distaste. She would never belong in a society with lots of wolves, no one ever understood her. She cast her gaze to the ground, a small wave of sadness washing over them.
Solace wished that she could belong, that she could function like every other wolf, but she couldn't. For whatever blasted reason, she had been born with the inability to speak, and others thought of her as cowardly, or slow. She was neither, really. Sure, she had become somewhat cowardly, but that was only from the constant nagging and people picking her apart when she was a pup, she had learned to be like that, she wasn't born like that. She scowled, brows drawing together in frustration. Ears twitched atop her skull, and picked up on an interesting sound a little ways off, not something that had been there before. Rousing from her thoughts, Solace jerked her gaze from the ground and looked out in the general direction of the sound, her nose twitching feverishly at the tip of her muzzle, trying to figure out what was coming.
She caught the scent quickly, and it was one that was quite familiar to her. It was another wolf. Not one she knew, but that really shouldn't be a surprise, Solace didn't know many wolves, if any at all. Her eyes narrowed a fraction, the steady thumping of her heart increasing slightly in anxiety. She didn't know what she should do, she felt like a deer caught in headlights. Should she bolt, and seem completely cowardly? The other wolf would know she'd been there, she was certain they could smell her just as she could smell them. Muscles tensed, her fur standing on end. It was too late to decide now, her decision had been made for her. Solace's eyes registered the tiny movement as the unknown wolf's body ambled into view. She braced herself, digging her claws into the snowy ground beneath her in a lame attempt to keep herself from bolting like a scared puppy. Maybe this other wolf would just pass by her without another thought? For some reason she doubted it.
Her gaze shifted as she noticed the rabbit which hung limply from the wolf's jaws, and she couldn't help but let an eyebrow raise skeptically. What kind of wolf just dragged their meal around with them? Wouldn't they normally just eat it? Solace's nose was filled with the mixed scent of blood and canine, and she could feel the muscles in her stomach tightening in protest. Why did this wolf have to be dragging her food along with her, teasing her? She ripped her gaze away from the dead rabbit clutched in the she-wolf's maw, letting it run over her small frame before bringing it to rest on her eyes. Definitely another female wolf, she was small in stature, much like Solace herself. She snorted lightly, muscles coiling more as the female seemed to be making a direct line toward her. Great. She groaned internally, ears positioned directly in front of her, toward the approaching wolf.
She watched as she treaded up to her, letting the limp rabbit fall from her jaws and land on the earth between them with a lifeless thump. Her gaze lingered on the bloody, mangled body for a minute, stomach still knotted and threatening to speak before she tore it away again, letting it rest on the strangers feminine features, which were decorated with a charming, yet disgustingly bloody grin. Solace could feel herself cringe, watching the other female wearily. She didn't seem to have any ill intentions, but that bloody smile was still unnerving. Ears flicked as she caught her rather enthusiastic greeting, and Solace could do nothing but stare at her skeptically, uttering nothing of a reply. She had straightened herself up from the tree, and she was very clearly on edge, her entire body had gone rigid, and her bi-coloured eyes were somewhat in a frenzy.
There was only a slight hesitation between the female's greeting and her next set of words, and maybe she wouldn't even notice the lack of reply from Solace, maybe she would simply think she hadn't given her enough time to respond. She hoped so, she didn't want to look completely ignorant already. This dame was complimenting her eyes? That wasn't a huge surprise, she used to hear that often, but it still managed to surprise her mildly. Solace wasn't used to any sort of social contact, let alone compliments anymore. Solace forced a small smile onto her face, trying to come across as somewhat polite. She couldn't say thanks to this female, but hopefully she would get the meaning from this tiny change of expression. She noted how the darker coloured female licked her muzzle, in a feeble attempt to clean herself up. Solace appreciated the gesture, she was a little easier to look at when the majority of the frightening crimson liquid was cleared from her face.
Solace finally decided that the other female was in fact pretty, she had a lovely coloured coat that Solace was slightly envious of, it looked much better maintained than her own, not to mention the female's weight appeared nice and even, making her look healthy. Was she part of a pack, maybe? Solace didn't know, but she looked too healthy to be a loner. Maybe she was just a lucky loner. Solace snorted again lightly, slightly uneasy with the attention the other female was giving her. She knew she probably seemed weird, or rude, having not spoken yet, and the other female would probably grow impatient with her soon, but she couldn't help it, she didn't know what to do. She was surprised that the other female spoke up yet again, although her surprise was soon turned into relief, at least Solace hadn't been given a clear opportunity to speak yet, maybe the other female wouldn't think she was completely rude yet. Her eyebrow raised again as the other dame offered her the meal, explaining about her luck.
Her gaze fell to the limp rabbit, and she was about to shake her head, not wanting to rob this female of her kill, when her stomach twisted and contradicted her, emitting a loud and unwelcomed gurgle of protest. Solace cursed at herself mentally, how could she deny the damned food now, when her body was so clearly in need of the nourishment? She tore her gaze away from the rabbit, it's scent rising to her nostrils and making her mouth salivate slightly. Rabbit was nothing particularly tasty, but it had been a while since Solace had eaten, and anything would be delicious to her at the moment. She sighed, a sound almost of defeat, her gaze lingering somewhat tentatively on the other female. She didn't know what to do here, she was obviously hungry, her stomach had given that away, but she would seem awfully rude if she just nodded and dove into the meal. She wanted to thank the female, and let her know that she didn't want to take her food. But how could she do that? Brows furrowed again, muzzle scrunching up slightly as Solace willed herself to speak out with her telepathic voice. But, she couldn't do it, she was too afraid, she had spent too long in silence, and she couldn't muster the courage to speak up. So instead, she looked meekly at the other she-wolf, a small, appreciative smile laid out across her muzzle. She wondered what the other must have thought of her, she probably thought she was a nut, just looney. Solace shooed the thoughts off for the moment, nudging the dead carcass with her nose gently toward the other female, shaking her head politely. She didn't want to just steal this wolf's meal, she had caught it fair and square.
notes; hmm, not the best, I wonder if Laya will think she's completely insane x]

Laya's tail wagged behind her as she licked her muzzle once more, working at getting the last remaining traces of blood off it. Her golden eyes took in the stranger's fear and her own posture relaxed; she really wasn't trying to scare anyone. Since she didn't receive a response to anything she said, the darker female wondered if there was something wrong that kept this other female from speaking; perhaps she was too frightened? Still, the stranger did smile at her compliment, and the smaller female returned it with a much cleaner smile than before.
Since she didn't have words to reply to, the smaller female paid attention to the smaller cues in the other's expression; the way her head started to turn the slightest bit at her offer, the unhappy look that followed when her stomach gurgled, the way her eyes shifted away from the carcass, all clued Laya in to what was going through her head. The sigh had her dark ears pointing forward, straining in case the light female made some other noise. The almost questioning gaze directed at her nearly made the petite creature laugh, but she restrained herself, "It's fine, go ahead." Her voice was gentle, though it wasn't so much the light coaxing one might give a frightened pup. In tone, it was more similar to a friend encouraging her companion to try something than anything patronizing; the expressions she had caught suggested that this female was actually fairly able-minded, though that left the question of why she wasn't speaking. This was proving to be an interesting encounter after all!
The look that colored the pretty face before her had the older female tilting her head, curious. Then, it morphed into an almost tentative smile and Laya was almost sure she would eat the food she had offered, but that wasn't the case. Instead, she pushed it back. While she couldn't say she was entirely surprised, the alphess was certainly a bit confused. Why deprive her body of food that it clearly needed? Her brows drew together slightly and she shook her head as well, "I'm not hungry, but you clearly are. It would be a shame to let a kill go to waste..." her voice trailed off and she frowned slightly, not sure how to get the skinny female to eat. There was simply no way if she didn't know why she refused the meal in the first place.
Her mind wandered slightly as she tried to find some reason behind the other's lack of speech. She still couldn't come up with an exact cause, but she finally settled on the idea that she very likely couldn't speak, for some reason. If she could, Laya felt fairly confident that she would have spoken up by now. She did allow herself room to be wrong, but she really didn't think that there was a reason for the female before her to continue her silence if she could have said something. It must not have been comfortable to have someone babbling at her without any way to talk back, which was why she had spoken less since she started wondering about it. Even if it weren't true, it seemed a bit rude to continue speaking when she wasn't getting much in the way of a response. "Please try not to take offense, but... can you talk?" It was a reasonable question, in her mind, and it would certainly clarify things a bit.

The skinny white female had seemed to relax considerably in the other female's presence. Her posture had relaxed slightly, her muscles not quite so tense, and she allowed her attention to wander the slightest bit, not completely alert on every inch the darker wolf moved. She wasn't so wary now, she didn't appear to have any ill intentions, after all, she was offering her food which she so desperately needed. The tentative smile was still present on her muzzle, and her bi-coloured continued to flit between the she-wolf and the limp carcass which was still laying on the earth between the two. Her ears perked up as the other female coaxed her onward, telling her to go ahead and eat the meal. But, despite the protesting growls which were rising in her stomach, Solace still didn't budge. It didn't seem fair to her, or right, to just take somebody else's kill.
Her gaze rose back up to the other female, still slightly questioning. Was she really, truly okay with her eating this little meal? She flicked her eyes over the other's form, taking in the lush pelt and seemingly full stomach. This other wolf wasn't skinny like herself, not plump, either, but obviously well fed. Maybe she was a pack wolf, after all? Solace's nose twitched, inhaling the other's scent with mild curiosity. It was definitely mingled with the stale smell of other canines, maybe she did belong to a pack, or maybe she was just a social wolf, unlike herself. Either way, Solace decided it didn't matter too much, she seemed nice enough, and that was all that mattered to her. Her attention was brought out of her wandering thoughts as the dark female spoke up again, and Solace felt her stomach twist in a light pain at her words. She would let this kill go to waste? As if speaking up for her, because she were unable to do so, her stomach emitted another rather loud grunt of protest, as if screaming in agony over wasting the meal. Solace sighed again, allowing a reluctant expression to fall over her features. She couldn't let a good meal go to waste, especially when it was clear that she needed it.
Solace hesitated for a moment again, her gaze flicking between the wolf and the food again uncertainly. She wanted to thank this wolf, but she didn't know how. She wasn't comfortable enough to speak up with her mind, she had almost forgotten how to, seeing it had been so long since she had. So instead, she offered the other wolf a small, meek whine which could have been interpreted as a thanks, or maybe nothing at all. Sighing again, Solace scuffed toward the dead thing, her bi-coloured eyes resting somewhat warily on the other she-wolf. She could feel the cold earth clumping and matting the fur between her toes, but she brushed it off, the only thing really bothering her now was her protesting stomach. As she reached the rabbit, Solace hesitantly lowered herself toward the ground, nosing the body before she collected it somewhat neatly between her forepaws.
Her gaze remained fixed on the other wolf, another small smile creeping it's way onto her features, although this one was reluctant and even sheepish. This wolf probably thought she was crazy, not speaking at all. What was she thinking? Did she think something was wrong with her? Would she simply turn her back and leave? Solace didn't know, and she couldn't gather her will enough to conjure up her telepathic voice just yet. So instead, she decided to busy herself from these thoughts and duties by shifting her attention away from the other wolf and focusing it on the rabbit before her, her teeth puncturing their way through the soft flesh of the rabbit's belly and tearing away the chunk of meat there. The rich, coppery scent filled her nostrils instantly, and had her stomach in a frenzy for more. It had been days since she'd last eaten, and even this rabbit seemed like the best delicacy in the world at the moment.
She tore at the rabbit feverishly, almost forgetting about the other female completely as the meat hit her stomach, quieting it's loud voice. It wasn't until the other female spoke up again that Solace was brought back to reality, her hunger now mostly subsided. Solace could instantly feel her body go back on edge as the other finished her question, and once again her gaze turned guilty. So, she had noticed her lack of speech. Not that it was too much of a surprise. Stalling for time, Solace ran her tongue across the ridges of her muzzle, her bi-coloured eyes lingering on the other's darker face in a frantic manner. What was she supposed to do now? She'd been asked a direct question, about her speech! Her heart fluttered a bit, stuttering with fright. Could she speak up now, could she give this wolf an answer? It was the least she could do after taking her food. Another low, frightened whine escaped her, although it was nothing more than a pathetic, wheezy sound. Don't take offence, the other had said, and Solace didn't, she was simply scared to answer. She would surely regret telling the other the answer if she did. She would get picked on all over again, she was sure of it.
She let her gaze slip back down to the mutilated rabbit, a hard lump forming in her throat as she tried to conjure up the guts to speak. I... The unintelligent, one letter word was the only thing she seemed able to form at that moment, and she let her gaze whip back to the other female wildly, her heart racing now. This was absolutely pathetic! What must the other wolf think of her now? Acting like a scared puppy. It was just distasteful. She cringed slightly, bracing herself to speak more. I can speak... Kind of...
|
It was the most intelligent words she could piece together at that moment, and she still felt foolish. She looked back at the other wolf meekly, her heart still stuttering. She hoped the other female wouldn't judge her too harshly for her childish, choppy sentence fragments, or her inability to actually speak. It had been so long. Solace could hardly believe she'd managed to spit out even those simple words. [/blockquote]
