Winter was nearing it's end, and Solace was somewhat relieved, but also somewhat hesitant. With the spring coming on, it meant that the days would get longer, and dramatically warmer, but it also meant that her camouflage would begin to disappear. Her bi-coloured eyes scanned the terrain around her, and she felt her heart drop. Her camouflage was already beginning to diminish. There was still snow, yes, and a remarkable amount of it, but the sun seemed to be starting to melt away rather large patches of the ivory substance, showing fragments of the dead, yellowy green grass buried beneath it. Solace moved through the area quietly, her gaze settled on the ground directly before her, her posture slightly slumped as she walked. She was feeling rather down today, despite the nice weather. The sun was bright and radiating a nice amount of heat which was collecting in her thick, ivory pelt. It was nice to not have to be shivering in the cold like usual. Solace didn't have enough fat on her body to keep her insulated at times like that.
A small sigh escaped the female's nostrils, the pads of her feet crunching against the hardened snow as she walked along. Her nose twitched gingerly at the tip of her muzzle, inhaling the scents which lingered close to the ground at her paws. Nothing out of the ordinary or exciting, the old, musty smell of small game was there, but Solace really could have cared less at the moment. Sure, she was hungry, she was almost always hungry, but it wasn't a necessity at the moment, she could live with the small, protesting knot in her stomach. She'd been far worse off then this before, she'd managed to catch a rather pathetic baby rabbit the day before, and although it had hardly served as even a snack, it would tide her over enough for a while. Solace was used to long periods without eating, it was just how life went as a loner. Not to mention that she didn't have much push for anything, no motivation to go out of her way to feed herself, unless she actually felt faint.
Her bushy tail hung limply between her legs, hips rocking as she continued forward, the dull roar of the falls coming more swiftly to her ears now. She had heard this place was beautiful, but she had never ventured out this far before. She figured that it would probably be nicer during the summer, but she had decided to visit it today for a peek. What else was there for her to do? She focused her mind on the noise of the falls, trying to think about that and nothing else. She hated when her thoughts tended to wander, because they always found their way back to the same thing - wolves, and how they never understood her and her disability. It always managed to frustrate her, she would see the faces of all the pups, and even some of the adults, who had picked her apart and tormented her when she had been nothing more than a puppy herself. Making fun of her because she couldn't speak, couldn't voice her opinion, couldn't stand up for herself. They had sickened her, made her cowardly. Made her leave everything and everyone behind, took her dignity and shredded it apart like some sort of rabid animal.
She scowled, drowning out such thoughts with the white noise. The falls were beginning to come into her view now, she could just start to see the water bubbling over the top drop, only to be sent cascading down the rest of the rock formation and into the stream below. Her minds eye formed a picture of the water pooling below, but she was still uncertain as to what it actually looked like. She would see it soon enough. A yawn cracked her muzzle, mouth parting to expose a nice full set of teeth, and a curling pink tongue. A wheezy gust of air escaped her muzzle as she shut it again, and she blinked rapidly a few times, clearing her blurry vision. Bi-coloured eyes rested at the tip of the falls, watching the water fall over the edge. She was antsy to see the rest of the falls, now, they even seemed pretty from such a distance and with snow neatly scattered around the jagged stone edges.
Her tongue snaked past her jaws, quickly running over the ridges of her muzzle before returning to it's damp cave. She could suddenly feel a thirst burning deep at the back of her throat as she eyed the flowing water. She hadn't realized how thirsty she actually was, she hardly ever paid attention to her body's needs anymore. How long had it been since she'd drank last? She shook her head, indecisive. She was probably dehydrated, and very much so. She should really learn to pay closer attention to her body's protests, but she just couldn't find it in her to care. Her paces increased slightly with the sudden urge to drink, and she felt the wind ruffle through her ivory coat, although it was not unpleasant today, it held no harsh, cold edge to it. She could almost see to the bottom of the falls now, and she was surprised by how pretty they were, even in the winter.
She slowed her pace once the entire falls had entered her view, and she let her gaze wander over the scene in a slight awe. This was truly a place of beauty, even in the winter. She could only imagine how breathtaking it was in the summer and spring. She sighed softly again, padding quietly up to the edge of the water. She lowered her muzzle to the rippling water, eyeing her slightly distorted reflection somewhat skeptically. Tongue slipped past her jaws once more, the thirst burning and itching at the back of her throat was far too intense to be ignored now. Her tongue lapped at the cold liquid feverishly, sucking up as much of the cold, clear liquid as she could, as fast as she could. The thirst burning at the back of her throat soon died down, becoming a manageable itch, but Solace only stopped for a second, long enough to breathe before she continued to drink. She was here now, might as well be greedy. She let herself stop drinking only when she felt like her sides were going to burst and her stomach ached from the strain. This was how she was. First she'd starve and then she'd gorge.

x. The snow was rapidly dissolving beneath his feet. Growling in disgust, he lifted a paw that was dripping wet and shook it. The glistening droplets splattered around him and into the mushy ground, forming tiny puddles he reminded himself to skirt around later. There really wasn't a good reason he was here. Sightseeing? Wandering? He didn't know. He had been trekking around the area for days, living his loner life to anything other than the fullest. The very faint sound of rushing liquid and the scent of mist had stalked him for a bit and he finally decided to get to the source of it. What confused him was the smell. Did mist actually have an aroma at all? Shaking his mind clear of these odd thoughts, he continued tracking the noise.
x. The past few days had turned out to be quite boring. Travelling around, avoiding any means of civilization. Then he had stumbled upon well, here. The place seemed to be abandoned, or at least deserted. The only life forms at the moment included him, the prey and various sorts of plant matter poking out of the ground. The feeling of winter was bleeding out of the the land, and the warm sensation of spring was seeping in. Taking in a deep breath, Fenris took in his surroundings through his nose. The refreshing smell of H2O, the slightly musty perfume of baby shoots of grass, the mouth-watering fragrance of mice. Normally, he forced himself to starve as there really wasn't anything left in his world to keep him alive. But now, the idea of dying was so incompatible with this vicinity that he decided to put an effort out to not die for now. Since he was hungry, it was time to put his new rule to use. He pursued the delicious trail of a mouse, nostrils twitching a mile a minute. A part of his brain started to consider how the weather had changed him. This was seriously unlike his usual brooding, glum self. It was like the warmth and sun transformed his soul into someone who hadn't lost the only wolf he had ever loved.
x. Soon, he found the little rodent. He stalked it for a meter and pounced. The tickle of the fur beneath his paws made him laugh. A quick nip to the jugular ended its wriggling. Licking his jaws, he swallowed the animal whole. For other wolves, pack wolves, it would be like devouring a tiny scrap, something that wasn't even enough to hide in the spaces between their teeth. He didn't look at it that way however, since who knew how long he would stay sober? Yes, sober, because his drink was depression. And he often got high on it. Not today though, as he wanted to live free of the pain and guilt for just a short length of time. And the sheer giddiness coursing through his veins because of his decision was amazing, as he wanted to jump up and howl for the universe to see how simply carefree he was.
x. With a partly full belly, he continued on. The happiness wasn't to last though, and he was beginning to hunch his shoulders again. A soft sigh escaped his maw. Fenris shrugged off the anguish that was threatening to creep up on him. At least he was definitely nearing the place he was looking for. The sound was getting louder and louder with each step he took. Mist was swirling around his fur, then settling on it. Soon, he was coated in a soft layer of water, making his body just a bit heavier. Then the falls settled into view. Most of the time, he wasn't one to admire things, but the beauty of what lay in front of his eyes was unmistakable. A multi-colored rainbow stretched lazily across the entire waterfall. The racket of rushing fluid drowned out even his own thoughts. The rocks behind the falls were hued nicely, and it completed the whole mystical look. Fenris had to gasp at the sight. If only Pier were here to share it with him. She would have loved it.
x. He moved slowly forward, green eyes focused intently above. He was so concentrated on it that he failed to pay attention to the path he was walking on. His paws gave out from under him as he tripped over something. He hit the ground hard, the breath knocked out of him. His ribs ached and he struggled to get up. He looked back to see if it was a rock. Nope, it was a wolf. A deep blush settled over his cheeks, and he backed up, trying desperately to squeeze out an apology. "So sorry! Didn't see you." he uttered, then lowered his head in shame. It was a she-wolf. He hoped fervently that he hadn't hurt her by his fall. She was also quite pretty, with white fur and the most intriguing pair of eyes. One green, one blue. But they made her look unique and entrancing. He hadn't heard her nevertheless, and blamed it on the booming thunder of the falls. Now he strained to hear her. It was hard to catch, yet he got it. She was thinking about how she usually went without food or water, and now she was starting to blimp out. He couldn't help thinking how the starving part applied often to himself. "You okay?" he asked anxiously. They were complete strangers, but he just felt like he should make sure of her safety. There was just...something helpless about her.

Once Solace had drank herself to the point of bursting at the seams, she slowly backed away from the falls, her white pelt growing thick with the mist which was hanging and swirling freely around the falls. She padded away from them a little bit, just enough to be out of the direct path of the spraying droplets and settled her haunches onto the ground, her bi-coloured eyes resting on the falls once more. They truly were beautiful. Now she knew why the wolves spoke so fondly of them. A yawn cracked at her muzzle, and Solace could feel her muscles loosen, as if giving away to her weight. She lowered herself onto the ground, folding her forepaws neatly before her, and well as wrapping her tail around the base of her body. She didn't know why she had so abruptly become tired, maybe it was from the illusion of a full stomach, she really didn't know.
The ground was damp from a mixture of the melting snow and the spray from the waterfall, but Solace ignored this fact, she was used too far worse conditions. She lowered her chin onto her folded forepaws, her bi-coloured eyes gazing out at the scenery sleepily. Her attention was caught by a movement a little ways off, and her gaze followed the long, skinny dark shape as it flitted across the ground, nearing the water's edge and then hesitating there, before advancing on her in a fast, fluid movement. Solace's muscles went rigid for a moment, but for some reason she felt no need to be concerned by the foreign thing coming toward her, it was almost like she knew it, which was odd, because she could hardly make out what it was that was rocketing toward her. The slinky frame stopped a few feet away from her, and a lightbulb seemed to go off in her head. It was that little creature she had encountered when she'd found that rock! The rock that was, by legend, supposed to grant you with silly magical powers. Solace snorted, like that had happened.
She was surprised, however, to be seeing this little creature again. She was certain it was the same one she had seen before. It had the same rich dark brown, almost black, coat that was sleeked against it's weasley body, and the same beady little eyes which were staring back at her with the same sort of odd recognition. It was completely absurd, and yet, it felt completely normal to Solace, like she was somehow connected to this little being, like they were old acquaintances of some sort. Solace snorted in surprise by the thought, a small, dopey smile falling across her muzzle. Had that rock somehow linked them together? That was foolish, plain hogwash. But, she somehow felt it was the truth. She raised an eyebrow in expectation at the little weasel-thing, trying to come up with the name she had given the species before. Mink, that was what it had been.
She started long and hard at the little creature, and it wasn't long before the little rodent skirted toward her, his beady black eyes seeming to roam her face as it stopped by her side, seeming to catch onto her tiredness and laying itself out beside her. This surprised the ivory wolf for a moment, but before long she felt completely at ease, like this little creature was somehow influencing her, calming her. Her smile grew a fraction, and she turned her head to observe the little creature which was spread out against her side, his dark fur melding into her own bushy ivory pelt. She watched the even expanding and falling of it's sides as it breathed, obviously asleep already. She wondered what to call it, unsure of whether or not the small animal was a male or female. She decided that female felt right, and picked out a name similar to her own. Solstice.
She smiled down at the little sleeping animal, and before long her tiredness seemed only to double. Yawning again, Solace lowered her head onto her paws once more, letting her bi-coloured eyes fall closed as her body seemed to succumb into a creeping blackness. It wasn't long before Solace was having 'day dreams', if you will. At least, this is what she would have called them, seeing as she were unaware of her new-found power. A light coloured wolf was roaming on his own, his coat an almost silver shade of grey, and he was going to visit the falls as well! How ironic. Judging by his expression, Solace would have thought he was completely entranced by their beauty, which would not have been a surprise, she had been, after all. And then, the weird part, her dream seemed to widen, and she could see herself sleeping just a few feet ahead of this silvery coloured wolf. He didn't even her, and he was going to walk right over her -. Solace woke with a start, the 'dream' diminishing before her eyes.
She snapped her head up, about to scan her surroundings when a sudden force smacked her from behind. Were she able too, she would have yelped in surprise, but as it where, she was lacking a voice box, and the hit had sent the air spewing from her lungs. Bi-coloured eyes widened in surprise, and a blur of grey caught her attention. She snapped her attention there, and was completely caught off guard by what she saw. She saw the wolf take a tumble, but quickly regain himself, and as soon as he turned around, Solace could feel the horror dawning on her face. It was the same wolf! It was the wolf who had been in her dream! She could feel the muscles in her face slack in disbelief as she stared at him, and she hardly even heard the words which left his mouth. What the hell was going on here today! Her concern was spiked again as she remembered Solstice beside her. Was she okay?
Solace's gaze quickly whipped down to her side where the mink had been resting, and she was surprised to see that she was no longer there. She looked around frantically, and soon saw the creature's little form skittering away toward the water, obviously having been frightened by the other wolf's approach. Solace could feel herself fill with relief by this sight, Solstice hadn't been hurt. With this knowledge, she returned her attention to the wolf who was still in her midst, and she was once again overcome with confusion. Hadn't she just dreamed about this wolf? About this whole scenario? She blinked a few times repeatedly, as if she were thinking the grey wolf would be gone when she opened them again. But, there he was, still as real as ever. Solace shook her head disbelievingly, warily pushing herself up from the ground as the male sputtered something in a rather sheepish manner. She fought to grasp the words he was saying, but the majority of them escaped her in her minutes of disbelief, and she only caught his last question. Was she okay? Being too stunned to do much else, Solace simply nodded her head as if in a trance, her bi-coloured eyes watching the grey wolf with wide disbelief.
Was she still dreaming?
notes; awh, you're far too kind, fenfen ;]. & your post was awesome! so hush :] && i decided to add in solace's little familiar since i just bought it and she hasn't got to really meet him yet x]
