normal - "talking" - 'thoughts' ____________________
She stirred, the heavy folds of sleep clinging to her like cobwebs. They hung on to the corners of her mind and snagged thoughts before they could get really anywhere. She mumbled something unrelated and curled tighter as she tried to catch the dream world. Like smoke, it drifted away despite her efforts, sliding right through her paws and waiting for the next snooze that the she-wolf was likely to take hours from now. She grumbled again, hitching her upper body forward a bit so her muzzle pointed up. She blinked open her eyes and closed them just a quickly. The sun still blazed above her in the way it did at the end of fall. It was a burn at the back of her eye sockets that faded slowly. She peeked out again, twisting so she wasn't leaving herself to blatantly injured as she looked around her. Her little nest was very warm, having held the large weight of a fur clad wolf all afternoon. Sure she had a den in camp, but she had gotten used to sleeping under a couple bushes and had come to like it a bit more for the daily nap. It wasn't as if she needed it to avoid the afternoon heat as she had in summer, but she enjoyed sleeping all the same, especially after being up all night as most wolves were. Her jaws stretched in a sleepy yawn, half-hearted at best. She didn't really feel like remaining awake until the sun had fallen a bit, but the way things were going she still had hours and hours before dusk would darken the sky and make it easy to catch prey. Maybe she could find Laya and see if the alpha wanted to go hunting. A small squeaking sounds had her ears twitching and she moved her paw to let Nash crawl up her shoulders. The rat gave her a look then cleaned the ruffled fur of his face.
She snorted softly at the rodent before her muscles demanded movement. She shifted her weight and rose. Nash clung to thick clumps of her fur and scuttled to the dent her shoulder made to continue his bath. Kalial controlled her urge to shake out her fur even as her skin twitched to do so. Another yawn cracked her jaws and made her eyes squint and stream with the pressure. She smacked as her lips closed again. Nose lifting to catch the scent on the breeze, she enjoyed the warmth of the sun even as the air filtered, crisp and sharp, around her. Nothing to worry about these days. She watched, of course, but she wasn't constantly on the move these days. She explored the land as was her whimsy, but it was not the frantic search for food that had led her about as a loner. She was a pack wolf now. Had been one for three seasons. Last fall she'd been scrapping away at live and now she was thriving. She had used up all her wanderlust in those hard years. Now, don't mistake her. She didn't regret going loner. She'd learned much more than she could ever have hoped for. She'd seen many sites, had the ability to find out how she wanted her life. Met other wolves...Her mind trailed back to the black wolf who'd made the biggest impression on her. Strong, solid. Malik. She missed the twit, really she did. Reason she'd left. She still felt it was a good idea. Too attached somehow in the brief day she'd known him. She snorted at herself and released the trapped air. Nothing unusually littered the air and that was good enough for her. Just the Kintla pack smell, the fresh tinge from the lake, the slightly fishy edge of it, with just a tickle of prey adding to it.
Her pink tongue ran along her muzzle as she walked forward across the pine straw that covered the ground like a blanket and to the lake's edge. She leaned over the edge before bounding onto the giant rocks that stuck up like mini islands. They were cool on her paw pads and she trotted quickly across the surface to a safe drinking area. Against the dark gray of the rocks she stood out like a beacon. Her off-white coloration was a blotch in the dusky coloration of the forest. The only thing that came near her was the pristine white caps of the minuscule waves that the wind stirred on the water's surface. Her tail twitched slightly as she lowered her muzzle and took a few quick laps of water. It was freezing. The jolt to her system woke her up completely and she risked a few more gulps before moving back. Nash slid down her leg and padded to the pool of water nearby. Kalial's eyes darted to the sky and she moved over him. No use risking losing her friend. She took the time to shake out her fur, the long strands slowly thickening in the pressing chill. Even without the fullness of a winter coat she was solid again. Much healthier than one would remember. A steady diet of dear had helped fill out her pointier edges. The briefest stirring of hunger edged her stomach but she didn't think of going to hunt right away. She was sure a deer carcass was left out near the clearing. If not, she could scrounge up a rabbit. It wasn't as if she'd had to eat it much. Her ears cocked forward as she scanned the opposite bank with orchid eyes. A small chirp brought her eyes down and she crouched to allow the rat back onto her back. He scurried under her ruff and hit against the wind - a weird black cancer on her.
She breathed in without much thought and sat quietly against the rippling waters. She had to say she enjoyed it here. There were little members and even less to do, but she liked knowing that Laya was there if she needed her and there was always a willing set of jaws to take down a larger meal. Winter rose up now, a threat, and the pack would be a great help then more than it ever had. Small, but sturdy. Or at least she hoped so. She curled her tail around her paws and lost herself in thought as she watched the landscape in front of her. The lake was very beautiful really, if one liked such things. It was rather useless to her. Coolant in summer as well as a good place for a drink and, if you were lucky, a meal of fish. But otherwise it help very little. She smiled slightly and rose up, leaping back toward the back. Useless, but pretty. Her steps crunched pine straw and she turned toward camp to check on things and getting her patrol schedule.

He felt alive, completely pieced together for once. It was winter again, but the snow was a mere thin coating sprinkled across the spawning greenery, and the sun was blazing and hot. The snow wouldn't last long under it's ferocious glare. The male's vivid emerald eyes traced the terrain before him with a keen look, his nostrils filling with the crisp fresh air. He was back to the good ld pack life, exactly where he'd always wanted to be. Malik was a family man, he longed for the closeness associated with others, and he enjoyed knowing that his pack now relied on him. He was only a guard for now, but that was still a start, he was determined that he would move his way up the rank, Laya seemed to like him, which was a good sign. He had taken to Laya immediately, he liked that she was cunning, very wise and she could use her disadvantages to her advantage, her size being the primary example. She was a smart she-wolf, and Malik appreciated that, he had willingly handed over his loyalty to her, and he had every intention of protecting her and the other members of her pack.
Since he'd arrived at Kintla, Malik hadn't met many other members, mostly, well, because there weren't very many. But that was fine with him, a little family was better than none at all. Malik smiled softly to himself, his long legs moving beneath him at a slightly quicker pace now, he was on duty, always on duty. He was doing his daily afternoon patrol. Around noon was always his favourite time to do a check of the borders and the rest of Kintla's land, he was always at his peak then, his prime. His most awake and alert. His tail swished happily at his flank, his adrenaline increasing as he worked himself into his running rythmn. Malik was a runner, he could have easily been a scout, but he felt that he would be more appreciated as a guard, he felt more worthy offering his protection. As he increased his speed to a light run, he could feel the heat building up in his ebony pelt, and he could feel the light spray of the snow as he swept it off the ground and around his paws. It was a fantastic feeling, as he ran he almost forgot his duty because it was simply freeing task, a completely enjoyable task. Doing something you enjoyed never felt like work. He decided that he would start his patrols of the day off with the lakes, which he normally did last, just to make a change of pace.
As he ran he kept a light tab on the smells around him, but so far nothing seemed out of place, and everything looked like it was right where it should be. At one point he came across Laya's scent faintly, and assumed that she must have ran the borders earlier that morning. His tongue slipped past his jaws, running across the lower half of his muzzle to remove the drops of saliva which had collected there. That was the only spot on his body which was not a complete shade of black. As he continued on his route, he found his thoughts trailing back to his previous life as a lone wolf. A loner. Malik could never fully decide whether or not those days were good ones. Sometimes he felt like they had been, but at other times he felt like they had wasted much of his time. There had been one day, however, that Malik hadn't forgotten, the one day in Everfrost where he'd made on actual friend, actually met someone he'd enjoyed, not just another acquaintance, but someone more important than that. But then she'd simply disappeared, as he'd always thought she would. He shook his head gently as he ran, pushing back the increasing memories. Kalial would have forgotten about him long before now, he had only been a gentleman who had offered to help her catch a decent meal. Despite his efforts at dimming the memory, Malik couldn't help but let a dopey expression fall across his features when he remembered her pretty orchid eyes. They had been such a unique colour.
These thoughts were soon overpowered by the dull ache beginning to pull at his thighs, his patrol was almost over now, he had visited two of Kintla's three large lakes. Bowman Lake, where he had first been introduced to Laya had been completely empty, Quartz on the other hand, had a few little rodent creatures bathing within it. Other than that, Malik had stumbled across nothing in his travels. Next on his list was Kintla lake, which was already peeking into view. He could see the sunlight shimmer off the water's surface in the distance, and he pushed himself onward, ignoring the slight protesting in his limbs. As he neared the lake, a scent wafted toward him which his mind processed before he had the chance to react. While Malik was usually quite graceful on his feet, the scent had caught him by surprise enough to make his sure-footed ways crumble beneath him. Stumbling over his front paw, Malik's chest began to plummet toward the ground, but in a desperate attempt to regain his dignity, he caught the ground at an awkward angle and kept himself from falling, but managed to twist his ankle slightly in the process. He bit back a bark of discomfort, and instead let his wide emerald eyes skitter frantically across the terrain, and it finally landed upon exactly what he had never expected to see again.
The air hitched in his throat as he fought to process the wolf in the distance, the short, brawny little cream coated she-wolf with the dull orchid eyes. He couldn't see the eyes perfectly, but he was one hundred percent sure they would be the same pretty orchid he had been thinking about only moments before. Regaining control of his mind and body, Malik's tail swayed from side to side at a pleased pace, his facial features brightening in a silent awe. "Kalial." It wasn't a question, or even a greeting, really, more like an astonished realization. Ignoring the shooting pain in his front right ankle, Malik moved toward the ivory wolf at a slow lope, his expression clearly ecstatic. His thoughts didn't even consider how the female might feel about his approach however, considering she had been the one to disappear at their first encounter. He stopped when he was a few feet away from her, his head dipping slightly in respect toward the dame, although the dopey expression was still flaunted across his face.

"Food would be nice, huh?" she murmured to Nash, twisting her head to look at him. She didn't catch sight of him but she felt his little body shiver and the soft chuffing of his teeth in agreement. It was a rather odd pair that was making their way back to the Kintla camp. Kalial herself had pondered the connection she had with the rat. It was probably the weirdest thing that had ever happened to her and that was saying a lot. It had come along with the second most bizarre occurrence in her life. It was on one of her first explorations of the territory and she'd stopped to take a nap. Then bam, she was waking up with a rat she didn't want to leave behind and a power she didn't know how to control. To say she'd been surprised the first time her 'enhanced hearing' - or so Laya had called it - kicked in was an understatement. Hunting got a bit harder when your head kept thundering with hooves and paws and barks and the wind. She could easily say she'd had more fun when she'd been cut by an antler. A nuisance, that's what it was. Something else to make her extraordinary talents look even worse. It hadn't really come in handy yet, and she doubted it would. When would she use it? There was no spying to be had, and Laya would definitely not send her off to do that sort of thing. The alpha would think she'd bungle it and Kalial was sure she would to. Not that she'd ever tell Laya that or anything. She snorted when Nash pulled her fur, seemingly sensing her annoyance. "Yeah yeah. I'm fine." It wasn't all bad. She'd gotten a buddy out of it. And despite the utter oddity of having a rat ganging off her body at every turn she felt better when the little critter was with her.
She may like pack life, but having to search out company was not how she'd envisioned it. Nash was her solid company when she was paroling or sleeping or eating. It was a rarity to have another wolf at her side for those things. Maybe she was getting sentimental, but she damn well enjoyed having the company of Nash, almost silent as that company was. And it was not because she missed that doofus of a wolf she'd met as a loner. Not way, uh-uh. So what that he'd accepted her oddities and they gotten along pretty well. Okay, exceptionally well. But whatever. Her was just a loner and would have wandered off on his on. Not like she'd ever see him again. Thankfully. Her skin prickled in embarrassment. She kind of regretted slipping off while he slept without even thanking him. Not that she'd ever admit it but she did miss him. He was too serious and it was a thrill to make him stop for a minute and fool around. Maybe it made her immature, but she liked to play and when Malik had let himself do so it was a joy. She sniffed, flattening her ears at her stupid thoughts. It was over. It had been....a while? She couldn't even remember how long ago that had been. A season? Two? And yet she was still thinking about him. She had to stop this if she wanted to get anything done today. Nash changed her thoughts as he wobbled his way over her neck. One ear flattened under his weight and then flicked up as he lay himself over her head. His little paws rubbed at her eye arches. Her heart softened and she let her flurry of memories disappear. She could keep herself going on that tangent forever.
Her pink tongue traced over her muzzle as she forced her muscles to relax. That patrol, and maybe a rabbit. She grimaced, still not liking the creatures. She would have hunted up a mouse or other small rodent but with Nash she had avoided such things. She didn't feel any urge to eat him and she couldn't help but feel bad when thinking of eating his brethren. Call her weak, but it seemed wrong somehow. She had a feeling he was thankful for that, or maybe that was her imagination. He was just a rat after all, though a very smart one. She breathed in and stepped forward, muscles bracing for the gallop that would get her to camp faster. A sudden flurry of noise behind her had her jumping, fur bristling out in surprised fear. She turned on the sound, ears flattening and lips lifting in a warning snarl even as she took a step back. Bears were out and about and she was not going to take on those things. Nash had flattened himself into her neck fur and was nearly impossible to see. Her caution turned to surprise, and the puzzlement as a wolf bounded toward her. It took her only a minute for her brain to kick in and point out some familiar features. The lope, the thick fur, the white blob of a chin. Her ears pricked up and her tail gave a soft sway, Kalial not ready to believe it could really be Malik. At the look on his face, she gave a yip and forgot how she'd slipped out on him. She jolted forward and her fur tugged as Nash clung. She ran toward him, ears flattening in excitement as she whined a low greeting. Her tail swung, making her rump turn.
She rubbed her face against his chest fur, not letting her brain ruin the greeting for her.

Bright emerald toned eyes were wild with happiness, it had been months since he'd laid his eyes upon something which had brought him so much joy. The closest thing he'd encountered before laying eyes upon Kalial again was the sight of a promising meal. A rather feminine yip of excitement brewed up in his throat, but he caught the noise mid-sound and it cut off in a weird, wheezing kind of noise. He was surprised at the female's response, she seemed just as happy and eager to see him as he had to see her, and the dull feeling of confusion swept through his mind, although it was muddled by the raging excitement. She had been the one to slip out on him, so why would she be so happy now? He decided that the issue didn't really matter at the moment, or need to be addressed, clearly the two wolves were happy to see each other again, and that was enough for him.
His tail waved furiously at his rump, his legs finally remembering how to move and he moved a few paces closer to where the white canine was stationed, but she closed the remaining gap quickly, and met him with a rather affectionate head-butt. Her scent rose to his nostrils quickly and filled him with an unmistakable sense of familiarity. There was no doubt in his mind that this was Kalial, one of the few wolves he'd ever taken too in his travels. He let her rub her head against his chest for a moment before he let his own muzzle rest against the top of her head, his only patch of white fur melding with her own. The pace of his tail had slowed somewhat, but his face clearly stated how happy he was to see her. He took a single step back, vivid leafy eyes roaming her face. A dopey smile laid itself out upon his muzzle as his gaze finally stopped on her pretty orchid eyes.
"Kalial, I can't believe it's you," His voice was content, but lined with a certain tone of disbelief, like he'd never expected to lay eyes upon this little wolf again, which really, he hadn't. It was hard for him to comprehend how the both of them had ended up in the same pack, although he had come a little later, obviously.
A suddenly out of place movement caught Malik's eye and his face turned quizzical, his emerald eyes searching the females neckline curiously. He saw the shape again and quickly located the things beady little eyes, he was once again rendered speechless for a moment. Was the female aware that she had a rodent upon her back? A quizzical brow rose, his gaze turning back to those pretty orchid eyes. "Kalial, I don't mean to alarm you, but were you aware that there is a little rodent riding upon your back?" The question was uttered in a tone of humour, mostly because he'd never seen such a sight before. A rat riding a wolf around like a horse? Normally such creatures could be food. Surely the rat wouldn't stick around if he knew they were wolves? And how could Kalial not feel it's claws upon her fur. Malik's head shook slightly, not grasping what he was seeing.
