Originally, wolves in Everfrost did not have magic. They were here for twenty-five years or so before the first sign of magic ever appeared.

The very first wolf to ever receive magic was a loner who was dying. One night he laid against a large, smooth, gray stone. When he awoke in the morning his sickness and injuries had gone, and he was healed. Not only that, but he found that, whenever he was injured, he healed very quickly, as if by magic. Realizing what must have happened, he searched for the stone, but failed to find it. Eventually, he was forced to give up the search. He traveled to a nearby pack and shared his story with him. They were skeptical, but kept their eyes open for the stone that the stranger spoke of.

Fifty years later, there were more wolves with magic. It was still a rare occurrence and few really understood how it happened, but it was clear that the stone the loner had spoken of was a part of it. The powers received from the stone varied in strength an ability; there were common powers and rare powers. And, as several wolves discovered, it was possible to have more than one power. Magic could also be passed down to pups, and the more powers that the parents had, the more likely it was that a pup would be born with a power.

Over time, the wolves named this strange, elusive stone. They used an ancient language, one that was well-known among their kind, though has fallen out of use in recent generations. They named it To Vrácho, which literally means "the rock." Few wolves actually know what it means now, but all can pronounce it.

The stone seemed to appear and then disappear, only to reappear in an entirely different place. One loner described coming across a stone much like it while traveling through a mountain pass, though it was not there when he made his return trip through the same pass. Others found it near lakes and rivers, while still others found it in the middle of grassy plains. Sometimes it appeared on packlands, and other times it appeared in outlands. Many tried to find it and then exploit it, but none succeeded. Some who searched for it found it, but usually it appeared to those who were not searching for it.
