With lightning speed a small framed, female wolf bounded after a gray colored blur. She kept pace with the creature, closing in on her next meal. However, in a split second the monotone blur was scurrying toward another day of life as the wolf laid with her body in the soil. The rabbit had taken an acute turn just as Saidi had stretched out her neck. While this shouldn’t have been a problem for a wolf of her agility, the technical aspects of walking and running had yet again arisen to bite her rear. As she had went to turn her paw had scrapped against her forward placed leg, throwing off her balance and landing her side first into the ground. With a small whimper she accepted her failure, watching as “her” blur faded into the distance. “It just had to be a rabbit, didn’t it? Darn thing.”
Without any effort of moving she simply lowered her head where she was, glancing up at the sky and gazing as clouds rolled in and out of her vision. For weeks now she had been wandering through Everfrost with no particular destination; or had it been longer…or shorter perhaps? She wasn’t exactly certain; the days had begun to blend together in her memories. All had been well, but nothing seemed to really stand out since she had started wandering.
A sudden wind sent a chill through her spine as she laid, the sensation disturbing her rest. Once her legs had finished shaking in the air she lifted her front, though her head still hung low. The wind had carried the scent of markings to her nose; not a far distance from where she currently was. Standing, she shuffled off in the direction of the pack’s scent. Was she going to try her luck with another pack? Her last attempt had ended under circumstances worse than failure. It had come of little surprise to her; as a pup her mother had always warned of the dangers packs presented. Her logic dictated that living in groups would inevitably lead to trouble, but Saidi had been unable to follow those principles. She enjoyed living with a group of other wolves; a loner’s life was fine, but it was unremarkable compared to her memories of a family, and later of her pack.
By the time she had reached the pack borders she had realized the answer to her question. Throwing back her head and stretching her neck, she unleashed a howl in the hopes of garnering the pack alpha’s attention; or someone who could take her to the alpha for acceptance in their ranks.

Standing at the edge of the forest, where the trees ended and the great plains began, Rostyn looked out over his territory. The trees ended so abruptly, opening up to a vast plain that made up a great portion of Nyack territory. Rostyn had guarded it for some time now, though there was little to guard it from. Few threats approached Nyack these days. In the old times, Rostyn knew that Nyack had been a peaceful pack, though the others had attacked it. While he had no intention of attacking anyone, he would defend his territory to his death.
In a serious mood on this particular day, Rostyn stared out at the plains with a sense of pride. Today, he felt, was a good day, one in which he felt strong and able. He stepped forward from the trees, into the light of the sun that beat down on the dry plains. Even after the winter snows and the arrival os spring, they were dry. He enjoyed that. The snow and the rain did not agree with him. He liked the warmth of the sun much more.
He was about to move forward more and break into a run when he heard something on the wind. He stopped before he had even taken a full step and pricked his ears forward, listening. For a moment he stood, absolutely still, listening to the howl. If he was not mistaken, it was coming from nearby, which meant that the wolf making the call must have been on the edge of the plains, preferably at the border, though Rostyn would not have been surprised if the wolf had actually wandered into the territory. Many newcomers did that these days, and it irritated him to no end.
He broke into a run at long last, this time headed in the direction of the howl. His size meant that he was not as fast as some wolves, but at least he had his stamina. He managed to make it to the border in a short amount of time, and stopped when he reached his scent markers. He tested the air for the scent of the wolf that had made the call and found it, coming from nearby.
Walking toward the scent, it did not take Rostyn long to find the source. Waiting at the border was a thin, small (compared to him, at least), female wolf with an average-looking coat. It was new for him to see one without a lighter-colored coat. For some reason he seemed to be the chosen host for the white colored wolves of Everfrost. He had found at least three wandering around on his territory, if not more. Sometimes he wondered if white coated wolves were attracted to others of the same color.
He stopped about fifteen feet away from her and looked her over. He stood in hid characteristic posture – tail hanging down with his head held about mid-range – as he always did. Rarely did he take on the posture of an alpha, unless someone irritated him or he felt the need to remind someone of their place. He looked the female over, judged her as not much of a threat, then gave her a friendly smile before speaking. “Can I help you?” he asked, his voice soft and welcoming, not angry. She had stayed at the border, which he found pleasing, and for that she gained some approval from the alpha already.

Finishing her howl, she watched the scenery before her in anticipation. Although unlikely, she had been hoping that the alpha was within sight; just in a location she had not previously noticed. Of course, in spite of however close he might be, he was not in the range of her sight. Maintaining her anticipation for a few moments, her muscles began to relax as the realization came that she would have to wait for a while. Lowering her front quarters she rested her head upon her paws, but only momentarily. Within a minute she had found the position unpleasant, and decided instead to roll over on her side.
From this position she could feel the sun’s gentle caress as it stroked her eye, ears and paws. There was no question that her favorite season was summer; she loved the sun and the warmth it brought. The other seasons had never been quite so kind to her. Without any effort she was beginning to fall into a daze until a soft breeze carried a new scent toward her.
Lifting her head she scanned the plains, her eyes stopping upon a white wolf coming ever closer. Quickly adjusting herself, she was in a sitting position by the time the wolf had reached her. As he looked her over her tail began to wag with excitement; not many wolves had crossed her path for weeks. It was the price of being a loner, and it was one that she didn’t like to pay.
As he spoke she realized the size of the wolf before her; much larger than she. He was reminiscent of her brothers; while there was no guarantee that they had grown to quite that height, their sizes had been imposing as pups. As he spoke her mind began to wonder in thoughts of her brothers, but she managed to quickly snap her attention back to the current situation.
“Yes! I believe so. You’re…the alpha of this pack? I’ve been searching for another pack to join, and was hoping to be welcomed here.” Her neck was positioned low; actually stretched out for her head to lift and see the stranger’s face. She was a very lax wolf, and her posture and mannerisms displayed this. “I would make myself useful for whatever you’re in need of.”

Rostyn looked her over as he settled down and waited for a response. She was smaller than him by quite a lot, which wasn’t much of a surprise. He was a large wolf. There were few that reached his size, and even fewer who surpassed it. He had to be at least ten inches taller than her, and around twenty-five pounds heavier, if not more. She was thin in size, and he wondered if that also meant she had some kind of speed to speak of. God knows that would be useful around here, he thought to himself. The plains were perfect for sprinting, and some pretty required speed over strength. He did not have that, even if he did have some kind of stamina.
Her coat was normal for a wolf; gray, with some black at the top and white underneath. His coat was rarer, though not so much around here. He was pure white, as were some of the other wolves of the pack. From her appearance he couldn’t make out what she might be useful as. There were plenty of positions in the pack, but he did not know her skills. She would have to tell him before he could place her.
“I am alpha here,” he said with a nod. Rostyn kept his posture relaxed anyways, not in the mood to make himself look like more like an alpha. Of course, his size often betrayed him there. He could have looked regal, if he had made an attempt. But this female was respectful and he liked her. She had stayed at the border as was polite and she spoke respectfully enough. There was nothing here to warrant his alpha attitude.
“You’re quite welcome to stay here, though you might find some of the others a little odd, including myself,” he said with a smile. “We’re in need of everything, really. What are your skills?”
