Nature this time of year was typically warm and very uncomfortable for Sage. She wasn't fond of the heat, not because it was, well, hot (it was, but that wasn't the the big issue), but mainly because in heat like this, nature simply wasn't as beautiful as during the spring, fall, and even winter months. Summer time was ugly.
The ground was cool beneath Sage's paws. This land was obviously a place that was normally cold, considering the fact that even in the heat of summer, the ground was moist and cool to the touch, as if the snow and ice had melted down just days ago. The timber wolf looked around at her surroundings, taking in what she could as quickly as she could. Up to her right, she saw branches bouncing up and down. She could hear the loud chatter of a squirrel in the trees as it yelled at it's neighboring bird who had dared to get too close to it's nest. She watched for a moment as the squirrel glided through the tree tops, running from branch to branch, as if flying through the foliage. The bird took flight, obvious to her now, why the squirrel was so loud. The bird was not just a bird, but a hawk. She saw the shadow overtake her body as the hawk flew over her head, the beautiful golds and browns of it's feathers reflecting against the sun high in the sky. She could see one beady golden eye focused on her. She stared back for a moment. These two had an understanding of one another. They were both predators.
Nature seemed to be alive around her today. As she cruised along, she saw numerous animals and wild life teaming about her. They all must be able to sense the fact that she was not hunting today, nor was she particularly hungry at this very moment. She was relaxing, exploring. She was looking for someone who lived in these lands.
There was the sound of thunder up ahead, and for a moment, Sage thought maybe a storm would be rolling in soon. But the thunder grew louder as she kept walking forwards, and never once stopped. This was no storm. This was rushing water of some type. She continued on towards the sound, her leisurely walk growing to a slow jog. Excitement was surging through her body at the thought of seeing a waterfall. She had never seen one before. Her pack lands had been too flat to allow for such a feature, but she had heard stories of how beautiful they were.
She neared yet closer, and her excitement level died down as she realized what she was staring at. It was not a waterfall, but instead a rapidly flowing river. "This must be where the run-off flows through". The water splashed up against the rocks, throwing mist up into the air. The gargling of the water sent a chill through her spine as it roared, informing her of just how much power the river had.
Sage sat a distance away from the water, close enough to it to feel the occasional spray of water when a breeze came through, but not so close as to hurt her ears. She admired it for a moment until the scent of canine wafted through the breeze. So someone was close then. How perfect. She let out a few loud yelps to give her location to the passer-by, not exactly the loudest sound a wolf could make, but loud enough and high pitched enough that it would carry over the sound of the roaring waters. And then she waited, hoping that this wolf was a friendly wolf, and that her nose was accurate enough in the number of wolves in the area.

Normally clumsily footing was no different today, which was not a positive thing for the Alpha in his current situation. The large copper-toned brute had decided to investigate the Avalanche River today, to see how the river was holding up during the summer months. He knew this particular part of his lands could be a dangerous one, especially during the summer months when the water from the glaciers were flowing much more rapidly due to the melting ice in the higher temperatures. The Alpha wanted to make sure that the lands were safe enough for his pack-mates to wander through and drink from. He knew this river was the main source of life and water in his territory, but he wanted to make sure that drinking from the river wouldn't be too tedious of a task during this summer. The pads of his feet moved clumsily across some unstable rock that lined one side of the river, testing his footing as well as the stability of the foundation.
A few rocks gave way beneath him, sending the male stumbling around comically for footing. Good thing there was nobody around to see him, not that the thought worried him much. One rather large rock gave way with little notice, giving the Alpha hardly any time to react. Skoldpadda pulled his forepaw back quickly, struggling with his other three legs to remain standing, but the foundation beneath him quickly became too unstable and sent a small avalanche of rocks rolling into the water. Skoldpadda's core went down, chest plummeting toward the rocky ledge first. He managed to catch himself just barely, saving his chest from the main impact, but his hip bounced off a rock rather nastily, sending a shot of white hot pain rocketing through his body. The male emitted a grunt of discomfort and annoyance, muscles tensing from the blow. It took him a moment to regain his balance and push himself back into a standing position, but once he managed to do so he quickly ambled off the stone balcony and back onto the grassy lands, wincing all the while.
The strong irony stench of blood wafted to his nose and he had a moment of worry. Had he injured himself bad? He stopped moving, favouring the right side of his body, moving the weight off his injured left hip. Golden eyes roamed over the shaggy matted fur of his left side, catching a glimpse of the damned red colour soaking into the stems of his fur. His lips pulled away from his teeth in a slight grimace of annoyance, and he turned his gaze back upon the rock ledge with some distaste. He would have to warn his pack to be cautious when roaming by the river this time of year, it was quite obviously dangerous. A sound not too far off caught his attention, and his ears twitched toward it, trying to figure out exactly what it was. A wolf yelping? Skoldpadda rose an eyebrow slightly, curious of the sound. Most wolves howled when they wanted assistance. Either way, the Alpha knew he was being beckoned.
Still grimacing slightly, Skoldpadda moved forward slowly, testing each step carefully to see how much pressure his injured hip would hold. The pain would flare up in his wound each step he took, but he knew he couldn't let it get the better of him, he still had a job to do. He was just thankful that the wolf wasn't too far off. She was by the river herself. He hoped that she hadn't injured herself on the river too, maybe that was why she was yelping? Worry masked his features for a moment, he didn't want anyone hurting themselves on his lands. He tried to quicken his pace, it worked but just slightly. He hated moving at slower paces than usual, but there wasn't much he could do. His damn hip was killing him. He could feel the fur around the open would becoming saturated in the crimson fluid, matting the already matted fur further.
He carried on, trying to push the pain past him. It took a few minutes for him to reach the other wolf who was sitting a little distance from the river, but he was taken with relief when he finally did, finally able to rest his aching body. His gaze swept over the dark hued canine, concluding the wolf as a dame. She didn't seem to be in any pain or distress, and for that the Alpha was grateful, but he was once again annoyed to see that she had entered his territory without permission. Closing in the final space between them, Skoldpadda allowed himself to take a seat not too far away from the she-wolf, placing the majority of his weight on his right side, not wanting to irritate his injured side any more. Had he been capable of standing and interrogating this female on why she had intruded upon his territory, he would have, but as it were, Skoldpadda was not in much of a interrogating mood. So instead, he decided upon a more simple approach.
"Be careful around the river, it is quite dangerous this time of year." His words were simple and monotone, his golden eyes resting upon the female's face, searching for any sort of reaction to his approach. "I am Skoldpadda, the Alpha of this pack. Were you seeking assistance?" He kept his gaze planted firmly upon the dame, not wanting it to roam to his injured hip and alarm the stranger, although she could probably smell the blood, it was a rather strong smell.

Sage saw the wolf moving towards her at an unusual manner. Something was not quite right about the way he was moving. No later she thought that, she could smell the metallic smell of blood on the air. She instantly went on alert, her muscles tensing as she eyed the male approaching her. Something was off about him. Blood was in the air. He was a stranger.
Sage stood up and faced off on the stranger, her fur riding up on her nape. Even though she wasn't a particularly muscular female, when she rode her fur up on her nape and spine, she appeared to have substantial size. She inspected the male as he yet neared her, trying to see if he had blood anywhere near his face. If there was blood on his front half, it was likely he was either a fighter, or had been in a fight. She saw nothing on his chest or face, and relaxed just slightly.
"It looks dangerous. Those waters are moving far too fast to get near. Anything that roars at me, I try to stay away from". When sage spoke to the male who introduced himself as the alpha of the pack, Skoldpadda, Sage relaxed back into a sit. She tried to lower her head slightly to him in submission to show respect, tilting her head to the good side as she did so. This was a natural habit for her, trained over the several years of having a hard of hearing side. It was when she tilted her head to the side to hear better that she saw, then, the blood that was on his hip. "It looks like you need more assistance than I do. How did that happen, Alpha Skoldpadda?"
She paused, then, and remembered that she had yet to introduce herself. So much for starting off this meeting in a positive light. "My name is Sage, by the way. I was looking for a place to stay, a place to call home, a place anywhere away from... him." Her tone at the moment was dull, full of bitterness and demise. It was also full of hurt, hurt from her broken heart that was still so tender.

The Alpha was mildly surprised by the stranger wolf's response to his approach, normally the wolves who decided to enter his territory unannounced remained calm and neutral to any advance that he made, despite his huge mass and masculine build. This little doe, however, stiffened and rose, the hackles at her nape bristling outward, obviously disarmed by his subtle approach. He cocked his head to one side slightly, golden eyes questioning her dark coloured face lightly, then the answer hit him. It was probably the stench of blood that had alarmed this dame. How silly of him. Of course the metallic aroma of the bodily fluid would have the stranger on edge, for all she knew he could have been some malicious wolf in the pack, a guard, perhaps, come to fight her away from the territory because she had trespassed. Luckily enough for her, Skoldpadda was in no shape to be a boogeyman today. He was aching, and needed to take things easy. Besides, the female had done nothing wrong except break the packs borders, she didn't seem to be planning anything harmful.
Once his words had been spoken, he could see the female ease up, her muscles relaxing as they should have been, and she gave him the honour of regaining her seat upon the hard ground. The Alpha's ears perked forward as the female's own soft voice piped up, and he nodded his head slowly, acknowledging the female's words. He was glad she was smart enough to avoid the rapid waters. His gaze roamed her features, taking in the even tones of browns and blacks, some which were decorated with tiny droplets, the spray from the river. Since Skoldpadda was already analyzing her face, he noticed the look of understanding which spread across her features as her gaze slipped down the side of his body. So she had noticed his disgraceful would after all. What could he say, he was a large wolf, and clumsiness came with substantial size, that was just something he had to accept. A small smile met his muzzle at the dame's words, his copper-ringed eyes softening the slightest bit in appreciation at her words. Alpha Skoldpadda, nobody that had entered his lands yet had addressed him so formally, it felt odd. "I need no assistance, let me assure you, Miss, although I do appreciate your worry." He tried to shift his weight slightly, the leg which was holding the majority of his weight beginning to tingle from the lack of blood flow, but that caused a severe pain to shoot through the left side of his body, and so he gave up.
The male allowed a small sigh to escape his muzzle before he continued on with the foolish story, wanting to answer all the female's question. "I was checking the safety of the river, I wanted to see if it would be okay for my wolves to hunt or explore around these parts at this time of the year. I guess I got my answer." His smile widened slightly, and he rolled his shoulder blades lightly, offering a small shrug to brush it off. Determined this time, Skoldpadda planted the pads of his feet firmly against the earth, and pushed himself upward, using mostly the muscle from his forepaws. Once he was in a standing position once again, he could feel the tingling sensation in his hind leg beginning to diminish, but the pain in his other beginning to throb. It was not an unbearable feeling, just annoying. Once he was standing, the dame decided to address herself, and the male nodded again. Sage, pretty name. Simple, but pretty.
His curiosity was peaked at the end of her sentence, and he rose an eyebrow slightly. Wondering if he should question her on it. Some wolves were private about such matters. But, Skoldpadda, ignorant as he sometimes could be, decided to pursue the matter. "Who would he be?" He probed lightly, golden eyes still lingering on her facial features. "And my lands are still quite vacant, there is plenty of room for new wolves, if you would like to stay here." He ended his sentence with an open invitation, curious as to how the female might respond. He assumed she had sought out this pack in search of a home, but maybe she would change her mind after seeing the lands and how dangerous, yet beautiful, they could be.

Sage was impressed with the male's stubbornness against the pain that she could only assume he was feeling. She watched him sway back and fourth on his haunches, trying to apply pressure. When he stood with his paws planted firmly on the ground, she let a smile curve her lips. She could not tell for sure how much the male was hurting, but how much was not what mattered. It was the fact that he was strong enough to push through the pain that impressed her. "I see you don't. It isn't always bad, you know, to accept help from others. You never know who you may encounter that will save your life someday."
Sage let a low chuckle flow from her mouth. She did not feel the need to reply to his story of the injury, but instead gave him a reassuring nod of approval. If he offered her a place to stay, she was likely going to take it. She liked this male. He seemed like he was in the right place as a leader. He wasn't some naive pup running around shouting orders and bossing people around. At least, he didn't appear to be that type of ruler. He seemed as if he genuinely cared about his pack.
And then the male caught her off guard. Did she really say that last part out loud? She hadn't even realized it. She lowered her eyes for a bit, biting the edge of her lip. Did she really want to reveal her history to a complete stranger? Sure, he seemed like a good wolf, an honest one, but so did Argon. Argon seemed like the perfect wolf. She then looked him in the eyes, keeping her head slightly tilted to her good hearing side, and let out a deep sigh. She wouldn't tell him the whole story, but if she was going to take him as her Alpha, then he deserved to know a thing or two about her, didn't he?
"He would be Argon. He is... an ex-lover of mine. I thought I had found a place to settle down at, and a wolf to settle down with, but he turned out to be a player, and had me and several other females fooled. I announced him to his pack for what he was, and then bid my farewell. He was an Alpha, and I was not eager to stick around and see how the pack dealt with him. I was going to be his Alpha. He promised me. You can see how that ended up. I just hope my sister and her mate are doing well."
Sage's voice trailed off. When she had left, the pack had been in an uproar. The females whom Argon had been playing were already trying to hunt him down. Basil and her mate were left behind. She missed her sister. She hoped that the pair and their pups were doing alright. "If you will have me, I think I would like to stay in your lands".

Now that the male had his weight evenly distributed between all four legs for some time, the searing pain in his side was beginning to soften to a dull ache. The slowly seeping burgundy fluid which had been running from the open wound was also beginning to slow, transforming into a clotted matt in his copper-toned fur. He knew his pelt wasn't as well kept as it should have been, but he knew that the dried blood wouldn't help. He was going to be looking very unkempt very soon if things like this kept happening. Shrugging these thoughts to the side, the Alpha returned his main focus to his guest, not wanting his wandering thoughts to get the best of him, as they often seemed to do. Ears twitched faintly as the female's voice arose, and a small smile graced his mug. "Words of wisdom." The Alpha mused with a soft chuckle and good natured nod of his head. Skoldpadda did agree with the female's words, it was a good theory, one he should probably practice more. But then again, he was there to aid others in need, that was why he was placed as Alpha, he shouldn't be the one seeking aid. But, everyone needed help at some point, even the leaders of the packs.
His golden eyes watched Sage's facial features closely as she processed his next words, wondering if his question would disturb her or perhaps amuse her. She chose the latter. It was quite obvious that his question had caused the she-wolf some distress, but she seemed to cope with it well, the only sign of her wariness being the deep sigh which escaped her maw. As she dove into her less-detailed version of the story, Skoldpadda nodded his head solemnly, not surprised that her tale was of a dishonest brute. Most of them seemed to be these days. "My apologies, Sage. No wolf deserves to be treated in such a way." His words were sincere, Skoldpadda did not believe in such tactics. He had been brought up a loyal pup, and he believed in treating others with respect, even though he could be ignorant and stubborn sometimes. Once you chose your mate, you were faithful to them, at least that's what Skoldpadda believed.
He was not too surprised when the female chose to accept his invitation to stay upon his lands, after all, she had come there for a reason. A content expression was plain across his features, and he nodded in closure. "You are more than welcome here, Sage. But I do have to warn you that my lands are not the most welcoming. The Glacier lands are harsh and unforgiving in places, especially the mountains and river areas," He broke off for a moment, giving a pointed look toward the river they were beside. "I don't want any harm to come to my pack mates because of the terrain, so be careful if you decide to travel to those places during the winter or summer months." With that, Skoldpadda decided that he had probably covered most of his bases. He didn't want the lands to scare away this female, he just wanted to make her cautious of the dangers it could present.

As Skoldpadda mentioned his apologies to her, Sage shook her head at him. It was not his fault that Argon had been bad blood. She did not believe in thinking that because of one male, all males were bad and unfaithful. Basil had proof of that. "There is no need for you to apologize, Alpha Skoldpadda, for it is not you who did me wrong" she corrected him quickly. "No wolf does deserve to be treated how I was, but it is also not right for you to take the blame for someone else's actions."
Sage smiled at the Alpha, trying to reassure him. She was hoping that all of her corrections would not offend the male. It was who she was. She was not trying to step on his paws, but she could not help but to correct him. He seemed to be accepting of it so far, but would he grow irritated of it and correct her? Time would only tell, and hopefully if it was irritating him, he wouldn't let her know by snapping at her.
As he accepted her into his pack, Sage smiled and lowered her head gratefully to her new Alpha. She saw his contentment on his face, and her tail wagged slowly behind her. She listened to his warning and let a smirk curve her lips. She was not afraid of the lands. She had enough common sense to stay out of the dangers the lands offered her. "You don't have to worry about the lands getting a hold of me. Nature fooled me once, but she shall not fool me again. I already lost an ear to her. That is the only thing she shall get from me." She let a smirk and a low chuckle escape from her muzzle as she stood up on all fours, her tail still swaying back and fourth happily behind her. "I'll spread the word about the river to those I come across.
Sage shifted her body around on her paws. Her right hind leg had fallen asleep for sitting on it, and now it was tingling as she tried to put weight upon it. Her face twisted around to show the annoyance of the tingling pain. She then pushed all of her weight upon her rear leg and huffed as the tingling shot up her leg. She laughed at how something so stupid could be so annoying. The smell of blood wasn't nearly as heavy on the air anymore. Sage then looked at the wound on her Alpha's side, twisting her head around to get a good look at it, exposing her torn ear to Skoldpadda. "That needs to see a healer, or a softer flowing river to wash the dirt out of that. Do you have a healer in the pack? You can't go running around with an open wound like that. There are greater predators than us that can take down a lone wolf. Speaking of the pack, what is my duty going to be in the pack"
